Nursing (Pathways to Nursing) Overview
Chatham University and UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing are proud to offer Pathways to Nursing, a collaborative path to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Pathways to Nursing prepares world-ready nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary in today's healthcare system. In four years, a Pathways to Nursing student can graduate with a diploma in nursing from UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing, a BSN from Chatham University, and complete a year of work experience as a professional Registered Nurse.
You will officially become a Registered Nurse (RN) after successfully completing the SSON program your third (junior) year and successfully passing the NCLEX-RN.
After successfully passing the NCLEX-RN you will enter Chatham's accredited online RN-BSN program for your final (senior) year.
Keshon graduated from Chatham University's Pathways to Nursing program in 2020. Now he works as a Staff Nurse in his hometown, in the Medical/Surgical/Oncology at UPMC McKeesport.
Students will take general education and science courses at Chatham's Shadyside Campus and prelicensure nursing courses at UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing (SSON). Click the button below to view an example of a student's degree progression.
Pathways to Nursing (PTN) students are guaranteed full-time Graduate Nurse employment at a UPMC facility upon graduation, provided they complete pre-employment screenings and obtain RN licensure per UPMC’s policy. Additionally, PTN students who accept a UPMC role before starting the online RN-BSN year are eligible for tuition advancement of up to $6,000 per academic year.
State of the Art Facilities & Practices
UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing offers a state-of-the-art human simulation lab for students to practice their skills before approaching a real patient, as well as a curriculum based on quality and safety principles. In addition to the tech simulation, we bring in real people for our nursing students to practice mental health care.
Program Faculty
Chatham and UPMC SSON offer dedicated nursing faculty and academic advising for all four years. Professors bring experiences to relate the course lessons to real-world situations.

Integrated Degree Program
Qualified students from the Pathways to Nursing program who are interested in nursing education can be admitted to Chatham’s RN-MSN Integrated Degree Educator track, saving money and speeding up the time to graduation with two degrees.
